The American Language and Culture Institute (ALCI) is the English language program at California State University San Marcos. We offer many programs for international students and travelers. The ALCI welcomes more than 100 students each year from countries including Brazil, China, Colombia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Ecuador, El Salvador, Finland, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mali, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, Vietnam, and others. Instructors in our Intensive Academic Preparation program have Master's Degrees and several years of teaching experience. Our average class size is 15 students. The average student age is 22 years old, but older students are welcome to join us.

  • Minimum GPA:
    Have a cumulative transfer GPA of 2.0 or better (2.4 for non-residents).
  • Official Transcripts:
    The submission of official transcripts from all previously attended postsecondary institutions is required.
  • Other Requirements:
    Are in good standing at the last institution of attendance.

Transfer Credit Policy

  • Minimum Grade:
    Have completed the four Basic Skills General Education requirements (one course in each area: Oral Communication, Written Communication, Critical Thinking, and Quantitative Reasoning/Mathematics) with a grade of "C" or higher.
  • Credits (Min/Max):
    The maximum credits that can be transfered are 70 semester hours. You must complete 124 semester hours at CSUSM for a bachelor's degree. Have completed at least 60 transferable semester units. Have completed a minimum of 30 semester units in G.E.D.
